Linux DAW

1. Monotribe sync

The Monotribe can be synced with any DAW or sequencer under jackd. This way you can record and edit in your DAW and even play along with your favorite softsynths. For convenience I recommend Ubuntu Studio and the use of 2 soundcards: the one onboard your laptop/PC and any cheap (or better) USB soundcard. Also you need a pulse wave sample used to generate the sync trigger. This can be done by recording the Sync out from the Monotribe. (You can also use my sample)

Easy steps:
  1. Start QJackCtl
  2. In the Setup window chose the external soundcard, not the one onboard (I think it only works this way)
  3. Start jackd
  4. On the command line execute: jack_load Onboard audioadapter (you can replace "Onboard" with whatever you want, this is used for jackd client name)
  5. If all went well, you should have in the Connection window Capture and Playback ports for both of your soundcards
  6. Now start Specimen sampler or any other sampler (I use the DSSI monosampler) and load the pulse sample.
  7. Start Seq24 or other midi sequencer and connect it to the Midi In of your sampler
  8. Edit 8 steps in a Seq24 track
  9. In the Connection window of QJackCtl connect the sampler Out to the Playback port of one of your souncards, this will be your sync trigger to the Monotribe, no other connections should be made to the Playback port of this soundcard
  10. If all went well, start the jackd transport and your ready to rock!

2. Software I use:

  • Calf Studio Gear
  • Ardour 3
  • Sooperlooper
  • Jack Timemachine
  • Seq24
  • Audacity
